Engineering Intern/ Co-Op – Computer Science Majors

McQ Inc. is looking for co-op and intern candidates to join its design team to work on R&D projects. Candidates may be available during the summer, spring, fall, or combination of semesters. McQ typically hires students studying one or more of the following majors: Electrical Engineering (EE), Computer Engineering (CpE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), or Computer Science (CS).

McQ is recognized as the technology leader in the development of low power embedded systems, remote surveillance, security and environmental monitoring products. For over 30 years, McQ has earned a reputation for delivering rugged, state of the art surveillance and remote sensor systems for a wide range of commercial, industrial, and government clients. McQ is responsible for the complete life–cycle of a project–from initial concept to customer delivery. Therefore, McQ’s engineers are involved in the design, implementation, manufacturing, testing, and delivery/training of its products.

At McQ, we develop custom embedded systems with state of the art integrated circuits (e.g. microprocessors, DSPs, and FPGAs), write our embedded firmware, write our own software for mobile and client/server applications, design our own custom hardware from scratch including custom printed circuit boards (PCBs), develop our own algorithms (utilizing signal processing and image processing), perform extensive modeling and simulation, develop our own mechanical designs, develop and integrate a large variety of communication solutions, and perform our own testing, integration, and transition into manufacturing.

The actual projects that each intern is assigned is based on the candidate’s experience, interests, and availability at the time of employment. Tasks generally include: development of software applications, field testing, embedded programming, circuit troubleshooting, circuit design, CAD modeling, algorithm design and simulation, data collection, and bench/field testing. Good written and oral communication skills are critically important, and these skills will be used throughout the candidate’s position with McQ.

Candidates should expect to work in a team environment, yet handle the responsibilities of completing individual assignments. McQ engineers work on small teams (average size of 5) to develop complex embedded systems, from scratch, in short timeframes. An intern or co-op student can expect to work on one or more of these design teams, assuming a roll as a software developer, hardware developer, and/or mechanical developer – based on their major of study and previous experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Enrollment in a Computer Science degree program, from an accredited college/university, with satisfactory academic standing.
  • A strong background in C, C++, C#, or Java programming.
  • Experience in software application design of PC and/or mobile applications, written in programming languages such as C, C++, and Java.

Desired Qualifications (in addition to the minimum qualifications)

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher.
  • Embedded programming experience through writing software on a specific microcontroller, digital signal processor (DSP), and/or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs).
  • Experience in signal processing and/or image processing, which consists of developing an algorithm from scratch based on some data input (e.g. microphone data, video data) to detect a specific type of target based on signal processing techniques that they applied from literature or came up with on their own. It is desired if the candidate implemented and/or simulated the algorithm (in Matlab, C/C++, etc.) and verified its performance with real data.
